The History Behind NBA Women Forum
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) during its Annual General Meeting (AGM), specifically on the 29th of August, 2019 at Harbour Point, Victoria Island, Lagos, announced its intention to institute the NBA Women Forum (NBAWF). This was in accordance with The Eighth Schedule to the NBA Constitution.
This announcement was widely circulated, both in traditional and online media, as well as various other NBA platforms and the NBA was widely applauded for this. Within a week thereafter, the President of the NBA, Paul Usoro SAN, in a memorandum dated 7th September, 2019, made good on his promise, and announced the constitution of the Executive Committee (EXCO) and the Council members of the NBA Women Forum (NBAWF).
The EXCO of the NBAWF was formally inaugurated by the NBA President, Mr. Paul Usoro SAN, on the 17th of September, 2019 at a ceremony which held at Best Western Hotel Ltd., Plot 1228 Ahmadu Bello Way, Victoria Island, Lagos. NBA officers present at the inauguration ceremony were the President, Mr Paul Usoro, SAN and Dr. Foluke Dada, the 2nd Vice President. The impressive ceremony was covered by members of the press.
The distinguished female members of the Nigerian Bar who were inaugurated into the EXCO of the NBAWF were; Professor Oluyemisi Bamgbose, SAN – Chairperson, Mrs. Chinyere Okorocha – Vice Chairperson, Mrs. Nsidibe .T. Aideyan – Secretary and Hajia Safiya I. Balarabe as Treasurer.
Following the expiration of the tenure of the first executive committee, the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Yakubu Maikyau in a well-attended ceremony on the 16th of January, 2023 at Westwood Hotel, Ikoyi, Lagos inaugurated a new set of Executive Committee members to carry on the mandate of the NBA Women Forum which is to continuously empower female lawyers to success.
The new Executive Committee of the NBA Women Forum is headed by Chairperson, Mrs. Chinyere Okorocha. The Vice-Chairperson is Eire Ifueko Alufohai while the secretary of the Forum is Mrs. Ini Irene Pepple. The Treasurer of the Forum is Mrs. Mercy Ijato-Agada while Ms. Theodora Kio-Lawson is the Forum’s Publicity Secretary.
